Hands on Hedges Project
More details revealed in Josias Cunningham's diaries. See the Crookedstone and Diary Transcript documents on the Resources page
We have traced the original farm owned by Josias Cunningham in County Antrim that George Midgley came to in November 1937. Josias kept a detailed diary of work on the farm and there are photographs and details of George Midgleys work there. Evidence of George Midgleys work can still be seen in some of the hedges. We are planning to run one of our demonstrations on the Cunningham farm in early 2011.
Six more George Midgley farms have been located in Co. Down. A demonstration hedge has been found at Ballydugan, near Downpatrick. We met Harry Bradshaw in Ballygarry, Downpatrick who was at one of the demonstrations in 1939. There are a number of old laid hedges near Pikestones that can be seen from the Downpatrick to KIllyleagh road. There are also a number of old laid hedges around the Bishop's Court area. We met a number of people who have laid hedges in the area including Pat Curran and Willie Crea (90)
To date seven hedges have been identified from 1938 tour, at Desertmartin, Bellaghy, Macosquin, Garvagh, Portaferry, Downpatrick and Coleraine.
