Rooted in tradition
The Hedge Laying Association of Ireland was founded with a clear and enduring purpose: to safeguard the practice of traditional hedge laying as both a functional craft and a living art. Its founders recognised a rapid decline in two connected things — the number of skilled hedgelayers and the health of Ireland’s hedgerow network. In response, they established an organisation to coordinate conservation efforts, standardise best practices, and raise public awareness.
A mission in four parts
The Association’s work is built around four key areas.
Skill preservation
The Association is committed to passing on traditional techniques through training, mentorship, and practical demonstrations. It serves as a hub for knowledge, connecting seasoned masters of the craft with newcomers who want to learn.
Ecological advocacy
The organisation champions the ecological value of managed hedgerows. It highlights their role as biodiversity corridors, carbon sinks, and essential habitats for birds, insects, and small mammals. This work is supported by ongoing collaboration with experts such as Birdwatch Ireland.
Cultural heritage
The Association views hedgerows as an integral part of Ireland’s cultural and historical landscape. Its work contributes to the preservation of a unique rural identity and the maintenance of the “living boundaries” that have defined Irish fields for centuries.
Community building
Through workshops, events, and online gatherings, the Association fosters a vibrant community of practice. It provides a space for members to share their work, discuss challenges, and celebrate their passion for this unique craft.
Recognition and collaboration
The Association’s work has been recognised by numerous governmental and environmental bodies.
